'Zozam Weekly' a Mizo news magazine created ripples across Mizoram this week when it revealed that 26 MLAs of the state withdrew more than Rs.one lakh each to cover their travel expenses. The shocking part of the story: These MLAs, belonging to four political parties besides an independent MLA, mentioned in their bill form the places they visited, the time of their visit and who they took along. It was owing to the RTI that the magazine got hold of the Honourable MLAs' tour bills. Let us pick out just one person of the whole lot. One MLA, in his bill, claimed that he visited Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, Jammu and Lucknow between September 6, 2005 and September 26, 2005 along with five of his family members. He withdrew Rs.1,40,850 for the said purpose. Meanwhile, a VVIP visited Mizoram, spoke to the members of the Legislative Assembly and posed for a photograph with the honourable members, which can still be seen hanging on the walls of House. This was on September 24, 2005 and the honourable member we are mentioning could not be mistaken in the photograph.
