'CRPF must disclose info on alleged gender discrimination'6 Jul 2008, 1148 hrs IST,PTI
NEW DELHI: The Central Information Commission (CIC) has rapped the CRPF, which is exempted under RTI, for repeatedly posting a lady officer in a 'male battalion' and said that it amounts to violation of human rights.
The central agency issued a direction asking the CRPF to explain why it took such a decision.
The Commission's direction came on a petition filed by the officer of the para-military force alleging that she was being repeatedly transferred and posted in 'male battalion'.
She also alleged that the department refused to divulge the reason behind such move which amounts to gender discrimination and human rights violations.
The petitioner, Dr Asha Singh, Chief Medical Officer with the CRPF, contended that she was being treated 'unfairly' by the force which repeatedly posted her in a 'non-family male battalion' as the only lady officer without any medical infrastructure laid down as per the norms.
Singh alleged that she was being harassed at the hands of male officers and was denied salary for three months during medical illness without assigning any reasons.
The Commission after hearing her contention asked the CRPF to disclose the reasons behind alleged discriminatory treatment.
'This issue falls squarely within the definition of human rights', the commission said, adding information pertaining to human rights violation warrant providing of information.
CRPF, however, refuted the allegations and said: 'The contention that she was a victim of gender discrimination was being presented as an excuse for a matter which is purely administrative'.

I took the examination of state civil services conducted by Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC). But I was not satisfied with my result of prelims exam. I asked my marks from MPPSC under RTI Act, but MPPSC denied me to give any kind of information about the examination. I filed first appeal against the decision of the PIO of MPPSC to the Secretary, MPPSC; who is also the Appellate Autority; but he again denied disclosure saying that we could not give any kind of information about this. He took the plea that there is a rule in MPPSC which provides that prelims exam marks can not be declared. he also held that as scaling is there in prelims so we can not give any kind of information about the marks obtained in prelims examination.
Then I went ahead and I filed second appeal to Madhya Pradesh State Information Commission and Honourable Information Commissioner Mr. Srivastav gave decision against MPPSC and even said to the Secretary of MPPSC that if you and your organisation is very transparent so why you fear in giving information.
By the help of RTI, I now know the scaling system of MPPSC and I also got the marks obtained in my prelims examination.
Thanks to Right to Information Act!
